A concise survey of compliant mechanisms-from fundamentals to state-of-the-art applications This volume presents the newest and most effective methods for the analysis and design of compliant mechanisms. It provides a detailed review of compliant mechanisms and includes a wealth of useful design examples for engineers, students, and researchers. Compliant mechanisms are lighter than rigid link mechanisms synthesised for the same purpose. Another advantage of compliant mechanisms is the ease with which they are miniaturized. Simple microstructures, actuators and sensors are widely used in MEMS applications 2. 1.1.4 Challanges of Compliant Mechanisms. Compliant mechanisms offer advantages such as increased performance (for example, high precision, low weight, low friction), lower cost (such as simplified manufacture, low part count), and ability to miniaturize (they make possible micro and nano mechanical devices). However, because compliant mechanisms are relatively new compared to more traditional devices, it is difficult to find examples. Most of the past research on compliant mechanisms has been restricted to the case where they are subject to holonomic constraints. In this paper, we develop a model of a planar compliant mechanism with nonholonomic constraints as a mobile robot that can move on the ground. The only actuation that is assumed is a torque on the system.
